AirTouch Communications announced that it had started commercial CDMA service in the Los Angeles area. Starting May 15[that's 1996], its customers began using its new digital cellular service, Powerband™ .

That is in response to your statement:

(purchased the first week that digital PCS was commercially available in the US - November 1996, well ahead of first commercial CDMA phone introduction

PrimeCo was in there too if I remember right.

Eric, I noticed when I purchased my Q-phone that the speaker in the Q emits a more natural voice sound than in my old QCP-1900; digital (whether an audio CD or phone) can sound clear but a bit unnatural. Nevertheless, I prefer the clarity even if I have to sacrifice a bit of the natural voice tone. Because of my experience with the Q, and folks this is anecdotal and not a technical thought, I think the speaker in the handset has a lot to do with midrange sounds which make the voice sound more natural, rather than software, etc., but you techie's might have a different view and hardware and software might have an impact on the sound quality from the naturalness perspective. I have not used the current QCP-1920, so I can't comment on the sound from it. Regardless of why, I think it is fairly clear that different handsets will emit a different type of sound (like any audio equipment) and it is not merely a function of the platform. It would be interesting together a large number of handsets and do a sound test, particularly if it developed that like different audio-sound system speaker manufacturers, cell phone manufacturers have a tendency that their handsets have the same but a distinctive "sound" character.
