NOVELL.COM....NOVELL.COM.....NOVELL.COM

>>I thought inktomi was the caching leader of the net.......is that correct?>>

Inktomi is in for some very tough competition from NOVELL.COM in this area.

Inktomi is a one-horse pony that just found that a thoroughbred is living on the same farm.

What we are witnessing is the complete unbundling of Novell, Inc. into a TRUE internet technology powerhouse.

For Novell to become an internet technology leader they had to first shake off their proprietary past that tried to strong arm the app market against Microsoft with WP, etc.

Those where the old days. Thankfully, Microsoft's posture is still the same - dog eat dog, kill or be killed.

So what does Eric do? He takes some oldies, newbies and goodies (Netware, BorderManager and NDS) and UNBUNDLES them so they work on a cross platform basis with mutiple OS's.

Essential hooks are left which leaves NOVELL.COM open to assist all other OS & platform vendors to leverage their investments by NOT having to recreate the same hooks all over again which NDS so neatly and effiently provided.

Thanks to Eric's understanding on the pure internet business model - open up and grow - NOVELL.COM is positioning itself as this central internet-based operating technology star that's neutral, open, etc. - and which ALL firms - partners, etc. - can dovetail with in some way to leverage their existing paradigms.

NOVELL.COM is "going high" - assisting others in their quest to get in synch with this new model which calls for openness, synchronization, access, no limits, etc.

Thanks to Eric, Mike Sheridan, Stewart Nelson and others, the culture of NOVELL.COM strikes me as more of a risk taking, risk accepting organization. This essence and balance of the need for openness and risk is so important for Novell right now.

Their move to embrace concepts like Digital Me confirm that Eric and Mike are delegating BIG pictures to BIG minds that can also humbly seek and articulate the many unbundled opportunities for many of Novell's core technologies.

Don't tell Gates, but the entire proprietary movement is OVER. Novell is in a great position to redefine the nature of technology leadership in ways that more is more truly in synch with the Internet model - open up, share, give, be neutral, etc.

Eric has to make sure they shake their BOX BIG past - reliance on BIG customers, etc. Novell has a great opportunity to come up with a killer app - it could be Digital Me - which finds it's way right into our hearts, souls and minds very quickly.

If this can be done, we have a whole new ballgame for Novell.

And if this is the case, the customer will be driving this ship from here on out. Which is RIGHT where NOVELL.COM really wants to be.

Good luck everyone.

Have a great week......

PS - Let's not let this MSFT GUID # story die. There is too much crap going on to take this lightly. It's OUR freedom and privacy.......

Not after Dell and CPQ begin selling a $4500 caching appliance

to the major ISP's and telecoms. Once this device gets included in a few networks, everyone with brains will want one.

<<I thought inktomi was the caching leader of the net.......is that correct?>>

Only because AOL currently is the largest caching user, and they use Inktomi caching software. I will say that there are many open issues with caching in terms of how its use affects what is written to corporate web site server logs, and the analysis of the same. I deal with this every day, and it is a problem. I've heard that there are a few companies comparing notes and considering taking action.
