Briefing.com - quotes re: tech sector.
____________________
General Commentary:

Traders appear jittery with market at current levels, as evidenced by DJIA's repeated failure to hold above psychologically significant 10,000 barrier... Techs playing key role in anxiety due to uncertain earnings picture... Earnings fears were rekindled again on Friday when IBM plunged on news Morgan Stanley Dean Witter was worried about revenue prospects in the current quarter... Earnings likely to remain a sore subject this week given that a number of the companies scheduled to report results, such as Cabletron Systems (CS-M), 3Com (COMS-T), and Micron Technology (MU-W), have a history of disappointing the Street... In light of the market's lofty valuations and the uncertain earnings climate, look for trading in the tech sector to remain choppy over the near-term.

Net sector has been one place that has been red hot of late and, unless overall tone turns decidedly sour, there is no reason to bet against continued gains... Slew of new issue offerings to keep excitement level high... Traders also banking on group providing another quarter of better than expected earnings.

Telecom sector also to be in the spotlight this week due to Morgan Stanley Dean Witter and Merrill Lynch conferences

Computer Systems & Peripherals

Breakdown in IBM (168 1/2 -9 1/8) shares on cautionary comments out of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, sparked a broadbased retreat in the group... Other notable losers included Dell (DELL 40 1/4 -2), Gateway (GTW 68 1/2 -3 1/4) and Apple Computer (AAPL 33 1/2 -2)... Briefing.com expects this group to remain under wraps until investors get a better feel for current/future growth prospects... Unfortunately, we're not likely to get that info for another couple of weeks.

Semiconductor
As long as there are concerns over growth prospects for PCs, chip sector will have a hard time sustaining much upside momentum, particularly those stocks closely tied to the PC industry such as Intel (INTC 119 -2 13/16), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD 16 1/16 -1/2) and Micron Technology (MU 50 1/2 - 1 9/16). Micron Technology (MU) due to report its quarterly numbers after Wednesday's close... Street looking for loss of $0.02, a considerable improvement over year ago loss of $0.41.

A company needs to keep accurate information flowing from their
IR division,I was misinformed by IR on the number of shareholders
of CPQ,that might not concern some but I look at it as incompetent.
The right hand doesnt know what the left hand is doing.
When a company hypes a stock buy back they are trying to sell
to investors their stock price is undervalued, and this is a reason,
but not the only reason, some people purchase their stock. In Cpq
case they said 1 billion dollars and only repurchased 1/3 of stated
plan.
Those are my FACTS and it pisses me off!I have tied up some
serious money in this stock only to watch it slide into a negitive
holding.
