Penni, there is certainly a lot of passive/aggressiveness in gross and habitual lateness. A friend of my husband's was guilty of this kind of lateness, as though no one else's time mattered, only his.

He invited himself and his armpiece over to our place one evening for drinks before they were due to have dinner with his mother. They arrived FINALLY more than three hours late. The gougere was irretrievably cold and we had cancelled a dinner engagement of our own.

I couldn't help myself. As they walked in the door with no hint of apology, I said, "If you leave immediately, you will still be late for dinner with your mother."
