Last week on Squawk, James Cramer mentioned that he had NT puts as a hedge against his long CSCO position. Actually, this doesn't make a great deal of sense as it seems to me that recently NT has better relative strength than CSCO but, what the heck, it's not my money.

Nortel Targeting Modem
Pools

By CHUCK MOOZAKIS

IT managers looking to jump out of the
modem pool are the ultimate target of a
new policy manager application that
Nortel Networks is unveiling this morning.

The CVX Policy Manager, to be released
in May, is geared to service providers
examining the modem wholesaling
market, said Kenneth Clay, senior
manager of CVX product marketing.

The app, which runs on a Sun
Microsystems Ultra server, dovetails with
Nortel's RAS, gateway and CVX 1800
carrier-class access switch products. The
app lets service providers funnel
class-of-service, quality-of-service and
business policies through their modem
pools, thus setting the stage for
customized services. The manager also
will support voice-over-IP traffic later in the
year, Clay said.

Ron Westfall, a research analyst with
Current Analysis, said Policy Manager
could help service providers rid IT
managers of the hassles associated with
overseeing modem pools. "These pools
are a constant headache for IT managers
and it's an area they would gratefully
outsource if they felt they had the
confidence in the service provider. The
Policy Manager will help them get that
confidence."

The app supports Nortel's virtual
point-of-presence architecture, which
allows a service provider to partition the
access switch into a series of separate
pools, each with its own authentication
method, database, billing system and
management interface. Virtual POP also
lets providers customize the segmented
network according to the specific needs
of each customer, based on QoS, security
and other requirements.

The app also will let service providers
create a variety of port allocation
schemes, including those based on user-
or usage-based models. Clay said this
flexibility will give service providers the
opportunity to charge premium rates
during times of increased demand.

The initial version of Policy Manager will
support up to 100,000 ports. Future
versions, expected later this year, will
double port support to 200,000 and add
VPN security features, Clay said. Policy
Manager is priced at $20 per port.
