VoIP - voice over IP technology is already being adopted by some countries; however, its implementation in Brazil is still subject to regulations establishing guidelines on charges and defining which providers may explore the service. It is the green light that solutions suppliers are anxiously waiting to set their foot on their business transactions.
One of the main distinguished attractions at TELEXPO'99 - International Fair and Congress in Telecommunications, Networks and Corporate Internet, organized by Advanstar Brasil, at the Expo Center Norte, in Sao Paulo, is the dissemination in large scale of VoIP technology, which is considered an irreversible process. Its main advantage consists on using Internet backbone for telephone calls at the cost of local calls, even on long distance calls.
Companies operating in this area are betting on the growth potential of the Brazilian market. It is the case, for example, of Hypercom, releasing its line of Gateways IP.TEL 6000 at TELEXPO, a solution developed to allow the implementation of IP Telephony. The solution offers 960 voice channels, allowing two-way communication with quality of service (QoS) and cryptography resources, which assures the integrity of messages sent through the world net.
"We developed a complete solution of IP Telephony to satisfy traditional telecommunication operators, new carriers that are just emerging and also, Internet service providers," remarked Paul Wallner, president at Hypercom. According to him, the line of Gateway IPTEL 6000 represents 40% of the company's invoicing in the United States. In Brazil, the company is anticipating to invoice US$ 10 million in the first year of marketing the product.
Motorola, one of the major suppliers of integrated communications solutions, promoted several demonstrations during the Fair, regarding the implementation not only of VoIP, but Voice over Frame Relay (VoFR) and PC- telephone connections in H.323 standard. Whoever visited their stand could attest to the quality of communication.
Using a high capacity concentrator, Motorola created a direct link with the Frame Relay cloud of GlobalOne, situated on the central region of Sao Paulo to perform the demonstrations. "The user does not even perceive if he is using VoIP or VoFR, or if he is making the connection between a PC and a telephone on the two-way connection. However, he knows that the quality is much superior than through a conventional telephone," says Denoel Eller, group director of Internet and Network for Motorola.
Vanguard switch from the 85000 family is the concentrator used for the demonstrations, one of Motorola's release at the fair, which supports up to 1000 voice doors and works from any network backbone. This new line was developed to satisfy the corporate market growing demand for end-to-end solutions.
Cisco is also demonstrating their VoIP and IP/TV solutions, together with their partners attending TELEXPO, such as Integris, Telsinc and Uniao Digital. Cisco 2600, is the product being exhibited by the company to implement this technology, which allows for integrated voice, data and image traffic.
