West Coast Gasoline Prices Soar Amid Refinery Shutdowns

Los Angeles, March 22 (Bloomberg Energy) -- Spot gasoline
prices on the West Coast climbed today as major refineries
continued to have problems with units coming back online.

Exxon Corp. said that its catalytic cracker at the Benecia,
California refinery has been shut for "several weeks" for
undisclosed repairs. The unit was closed as Exxon tried
restarting the cracker which was shut in January for routine
maintenance.

Atlantic Richfield Co. had to shut its hydrocracker and
catalytic cracker last week following a partial power outage at
the Carson, California refinery. Traders speculated that the
units would be down for at most two days, however, the units are
expected to return the end of this week.

In Los Angeles, March gasoline meeting California Air
Resource Board standards was discussed at 84-85 cents, 16 cents
higher than Friday. April gasoline was seen at 80-81 cents a
gallon.

In San Francisco, March CARB gasoline rose 14.50 cents today
to 82-85 cents. Conventional, or "clear", gasoline traded around
79-82 cents.

April gasoline futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange
closed 1.78 cents higher at 49.42 cents, while Nymex heating oil
settled at 42.39 cents, up 1.70 cents.

Members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries
are gathering this week in Vienna to vote on an agreement with
non-OPEC members to reduce output by 2 million barrels-a-day.
OPEC members are concerned with the worldwide crude oil glut that
led to a 12 year low for crude oil back in December.
