Intel in trouble... As long as we're talking about technology, PC
Data released some figures this morning showing that AMD
(AMD) has had more than 50 percent of U.S. retail market. Intel's
(INTC) market share, meanwhile, is down to 38 percent. Further,
over the last year AMD's unit sales have increased by about 70
percent. The sub-$1,000 area continues to be red hot,
accounting for 62 percent of all unit sales. One can quickly see
why the PC sector and Intel are having problems: The market is
not as profitable for everyone as it used to be, since ASPs have
basically been more than halved in the last year. Not only that,
Intel's losing market share, as we have been discussing.

re:Cringe - AMD K6-2 400 MHz CPUS have PLUMMETED in the last 5 days on
Pricewatch.

They are DOWN to $131 each. They were $155 about 10 days ago.

This drop seems to be in concert with the Gateway K6-2 problem becoming "public"
knowledge.

That, and the fact that Celeron 400 prices (an overall better performing chip that K6/2 400) are now in the $130 range. Of course, Intel now has the Celeron 430 chip at $170-$180 to maintain ASPs at the low-end. Forget Q1 for AMD...Q2 is shaping out to be very ugly for AMD...
