If I lived in the non-Randian world of the US, I could have simply turned the whole case over to some welfare bureaucrat to blow some tax dollars on.

Things are different in the third world.

FT would probably reproach me for being soft headed, but I wonder what he would do under the same circumstances. I suspect him of being more human than he likes to appear.
