*CDMA Waveform patent* Ericy claims to have invented soft handoff, among other things, and as Dave[4] would point out, the courts flip a coin and anybody can win; the patent can still be disputed in court. Even if the court says Q! does own that technology it means Q! has to trade for the 1890 soft handoff invention of Ericy who used to have woodcutters call out to each other 'Timmmbbbbbeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr'. The person nearest the tree would call out and others nearby would receive the call and hand off the message to others. They would use similar frequencies on both the forward and reverse link and each voice was encoded with a particular wave form so that it could be identified and separated from the other sounds such as breaking branches, swishing air and thumping trunks and the odd scream as a slow-moving lumberjack bit the dust. Meanwhile, Ericy has brilliantly positioned themselves in the first half in a consolidating mode ready for action. Q! in an act of desperation just goes on pouring millions of ASICs and handsets out the door. Says Ericy boss: ----------------------------------------------------------------- ''In connection with the annual results we announced an expectation of lower results for the first six months of 1999. I can confirm this and particularly in connection with the first quarter. The increase in sales has slowed at the same time as costs for restructuring have appeared. At the same time it is important to note that the first quarter is often a poor indicator for the balance of the year. ''This shift in technology and development will be as extensive for man as when the telephone became generally available. It involves the mobile Internet, an area in which Ericsson has unique strength. We are the world leader in mobility. ----------------------------------------------------------------- He seems to be saying that CDMA is important although they previously said it wouldn't work etc etc blah blah blah. They are the world leader in mobility eh? I wonder what that means. That seems to be like being the world leader in horseshoes when the tyre industry is taking off. Maybe he means the world leader in VW40. Meanwhile, putting Schmitt in charge of Primeco was like putting the fox in charge of the chickens. He got booted out and went to Omnipoint which is paying the price for his bias against CDMA. I believe he had previously worked at Ericy. Maybe that is a way of keeping GSM sales up - get a GSM fan club member to run the company. Not good for shareholders, but good for GSM sales. I wonder how OneTel will go in Australia with their GSM network which is now being installed; big trouble I'd say. Clark, Q! never made any excessive claims about capacity. The 40x claim stemmed from a 1989 presentation and was obviously only a theoretical possibility because there were no operating test systems and many of the necessary inventions had not been done. If there were excessive claims, there would be many billions in contingent liabilities looking like huge ugly warts in Q! balance sheet. There aren't any. Ever since IS-95 has been a real system, claims have been around the 10x analogue area. Q! has lately started saying they should be able to push that up to 20x or even more. Things just go on getting better in the CDMA world. The current sell-off is as expected. All this news, fun though it might be, was completely expected and predictable, including the patent confirmation, the Chinese talk of going cdmaOne and cdma2000, the Ericy 'consolidation', the very, very good quarter, the Vodafone/AirTouch support for a unified standard. Sure, there have been naysayers such as Tero and Bill Frezza, but they don't own Q! shares. So when the news hits, those who bought at $50 figure they might as well grab their profit and run. They haven't got the time or inclination to figure out all the arcane Walsh code stuff, so don't want to wait around. The overall market is taking a slight gasp too, so all get carried down. Wow! say they, look how high we are. Dow 10,000. What they fail to realize is that that is the starting point for where people are going, not the end point. We aren't all going to lie down and die Jan2000. The New Paradigm will race on madly. Mqurice @872 $100/1000/31March1999 Fatwah withdrawn! PS: Q! Selloff was DOWN, not up. But it's transient and on thin volume. The good news is good because Q! is going to do very well. China will buy a LOT of cdmaOne and cdma2000. A key patent is confirmed and the others will be so Q! royalties are secure. Told you so:Message 8371355
