[OT]: WW - -

Just had to be the first kid on your block?

You know, our new machines are P-II 350s and P-II 450s and even with extensive multiple program jobs it's hard to tell the difference, I think you're paying the premium price for overkill you don't need. The very newest Intel stuff is always priced much higher than what they discount the current stuff to shortly after introduction. It's only a guess but I'll bet I can put the P-II 350 that's in my room next to one of those P-III 500s and run neck-in-neck with it unless I was trying to come up with a new record for calculating the digits of pi. If I were you I'd go with a P-II 350 w/ 128 MB of SD-RAM and overclock it to 400 which they will easily do. Use the saved money for a real nice printer or something.

Make sure you opt for NT v4.01 instead of Win98 and make sure it's got Service Pack 3 on it - don't even bother with Service Pack 4 as it's been reported that it causes more problems than it solves.

As to the USRX/COMS modem - yes, I think they're the best, always have been. I'm running one right now but I've left mine as x2 since the universal v.90 isn't always as fast. I think it has something to do with trying to accomodate the K56-Flex code into the subroutines.

Ultra ATA - definitely, but that's about all you can buy lately. It rivals the 40 MBps Fast Wide SCSI drives since you can get a 33 MBps transfer rate out of it. I haven't a clue as to why you'd need that much storage though, often it's a better idea to have two smaller hard drives. This is not only a faster solution when running multiple applications but a sensible one as you can back up your "can't lose" files between one to the other thus if one drive fails you've got a copy.

Flat Panel Monitor? They're just a large laptop screen and not very fast. If you plan on watching any DVD movies I'd consider a conventional screen monitor, perhaps a Mitsubishi, NEC or Paradise which are all outstanding.

FM quality? Never heard one but that would be hard to mess up. The speakers are usually the key to any stereo system and that also applies to your computer.

Hope I didn't offend you, think about what I've said for a while and if you want to talk e-mail or send me a SI PM and I'll call you.

(QT) ~ WW.com, Sounds like a great system, you could likely save $ 500 or so by going with a Non Big name & end up with more features and higher quality components at the same time. Try a unit from ABS or American Business Systems, as they currently seem to be leading the big boys by quite a bit for the same price.

You can see their stuff in Computer Shopper magazine (computer store or Target carries it) April Issue out not, or try their webb site at buyabs.com

The March issue of Computer Shopper ran a half dozen low priced DVD models & ABS's blew the others away.

They seem to be providing the highest quality components & packaging them for the right price, good selection of features, etc. Don't see how you could loose with what they are currently dishing up.
