The advances in delivery accuracy for such "dumb" munitions as anti personnel/anti vehicle cluster munitions (CBUs) has improved drastically even since the Persian Gulf. Some of those can be delivered from as far as 15 miles away, from an altitude of 20K feet as long as the target is large enough. Nuke, as a former ground pounder and later on tasked with "force protection" and EEFIs, I can tell you the first thing I would be telling my commander would be spread the forces out, dig 'em in, and get as close to the local unarmed population as you can. I understand as a former pilot, you guys all think that tactical bombing is the wave of the future in your quest to make us infantrymen obsolete <VBG> , but you surely know this isn't the flat terrain and clear-skies of Iraq. Even if you use some of those GPS "JDAMs" guided bombs, you still have to wire in the coordinates for the GPS "seeker". I don't know if you can do that while in the air, but assuming you can, you have to acquire the target, dial in the data, and release the weapon. Acquiring the target means getting under cloud cover, or using your thermal imaging, and I have to believe that puts your aircraft at risk doing this. And Thermal imaging has a difficult time telling good guy from bad guy. As for the Albanians.. I think they would rather both sides leave them alone and quit trying to put them in situations where they likely to be killed... :0) Don't think that's gonna happen though. Before this over, NATO will either be forced to commit troops to Kosovo, or will be humiliated by its inability to force Milosevec to bow to their will. And if the Russians start becoming actively involved with weapons shipments and "volunteers", we have to decide exactly how far we want to come to the brink over the Balkans. I think Milosevic is counting on the Russians stirring things up with NATO. The Russians are tired of being pushed around and treated as a 3rd world country. Becoming involved in Serbia might be just the leverage they need to apply a little leverage on other issues, like the IMF and their outstanding debts. Btw, reports just coming out are they one NATO plane has been shot down today. Hmmm... wonder who's it was? Regards, Ron
