No, I wasn't a pilot in the Air Force. I was a munitions specialist and since retirement I have been employed as a systems engineer by one of the largest developers and manufacturers of stand-off munitions in the world. I agree that it is impossible to completely stop collateral damage from even the most accurate "smart weapons". I also agree that in a limited war, the only way to completely defeat an adversary is to go in on the ground. Unlike the Persian Gulf, which was a turkey shoot for our advanced weaponry, we will have to resort to different tactics if we plan on seriously degrading Serbia's military without sending in ground troops. One possibility is to mount a massive attack on Serbian infrastructure, even if that means taking out targets in the middle of Belgrade. If we learned anything from Desert Storm it should be that we shouldn't call a cease fire until we have destroyed our foe's ability to wage war. Just as a point of interest, I understand our forces are deploying a new weapon system in Serbia. (Not manufactured by my company) It has the ability to loiter over a target area until it identifies targets (it can discriminate between a NATO tank and a Serbian tank). It can then fire up to two dozen armor piercing submunitions simultaneously, destroying targets over several acres while leaving non-targets untouched. Ah, the wonders of modern science. Incidentally, I spent yesterday evening on the New York Times forum, discussing Kosovo. If you think we get acrimonious here, you haven't seen anything. There are quite a few ethnic Serbs active on that thread and they are spouting some really nasty threats against "MURDERING YANKEES BASTARDS DIE! DIE! DIE! IN PIT OF HELL AND BLOOD! COLUMBUS WAS EVIL MAN FOR YOUR DISCOVERING" (a direct quote). I couldn't help but offer a few insights of my own and now I think I'm committed to a blood feud and a fight to the death with some slav shithead. It's either that or I'm engaged to his sister. It was hard to tell. Anybody interested can find that forum just by accessing the N Y Times website. It almost makes you appreciate how civil we are here.
