Market Commentary: Wednesday March 24, 1999

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trading will begin today, in the aftermath of market losses prompted by concerns that remain in place.

The first of these is a regularly recurring effect and the results are somewhat predictable. We are in the middle of the first quarter earnings preview season and the recent series of negative pre-announcements has investors on edge. Media experts have added to the pessimistic atmosphere, with dire predictions of significant market corrections. We face much the same Wall of Worry every quarter and usually manage to climb over it. The good earnings will start coming out next week. Are we in for more punishment, after yesterday's whipping? Maybe some. Stocks are not cheap and we may need a longer take-off ramp for our run at Dow 10,000. Will we head south in a big way? Probably not. The end of the quarter approaches and institutional managers will be dressing windows as they always do. Further, tax day is just around the corner and a good number of Uncle Sam's refund checks will find their way into the market.

Well, how to respond...

1) if there are 50 million shares, you think this web site is worth 500 milllion ?

2) i bought 5 puts with 'house' money. I sold calls off a gold stock called barrick gold and took a shot here...To sneer at my conviction is equivalent to saying a thou thrown this way is like nothing at all..It is still a thousand...I never said I'd make out like George Soros on the deal, but I do think by July we may be back to a few bucks on the stock and I'll be up...If it doesn't work, I've had my kick at the can at 'shorting the dot com set'...Trying to bait me to invest tens of thousands on puts is quite sick...You may have been kidding, but I suggest anyone who talks like this may be in need of professional help...I don't think bii owes me anything, but all the momentum players where I trade seem enamoured with the stock and many have not looked at the web site or know how to turn on a computer...

3) net stocks that aren't top tier, i..e yahoo or aol have a 3 day run...bii may have had its...

4) Are you sure naz is just weeks away...If it doesn't happen, well,
you can 'forget about it' (to quote George Costanza)...

5) Good luck and if you strike it rich, I hope you do a little bit for charity...Buy a homeless guy a coffee or a kid from a poor neighbourhood a toy...Or do it anyway, even if you don't strike it rich...
A lot of people couldn't scrape the $ for a s.i. membership together, let alone play with stocks...
