why purchase a bleeding entity
Well, if you put it that way it doesn't make sense. But if IBM just makes an agreement to get Dell machines with an IBM logo (at a good price) then it makes more sense. IBM closes their facilities, Dell does not take them over, they just start building machines in their usual way. The custom logo is no big deal. IBM still gets to pass out cheap PCs as deal sweeteners for their larger system and services while Dell builds and delivers.
