I thought our favorite company should be poised to consistently earn s***loads of money on the (relatively) easy stuff (ASICs and royalties and handsets).

First, I think it probable that Europe will go W-CDMA, now known as one part of the family, and Qualcomm does not make chips or handsets for that.

Second, the moaning is over the fact that Qualcomm probably could have done just as well by continuing the trial (remember that Qualcomm already trimmed the infrastructure business so that it was no longer losing money), and Ericsson would have done considerably worse. I.e. Ericsson gained expertise in CDMA, Qualcomm only got to where they would have gotten anyway in another 6 months or so.
