Good Morning Carl,

There are too many cheerleaders on this thread and they do not understand how vulnerable Cymer really is too the competition.

There have been well over one hundred posts claiming Cymer is ready to succumb to the competition since the thread's inception. Here is an early example from over two years ago:
Message 994790

In the meantime, Cymer has executed very well. Their dominance of the excimer laser for microlithography market is repugnant to many people for reasons unknown.

Considering you follow the industry for a living, you must have better information than all the previous people who said Cymer is vulnerable in their own way. What has led you to this conclusion?

I'll give you a few of my thoughts with respect to Cymer's competitive position, before you respond to my question. They are in a superior position in terms of support infrastructure. Lambda has just installed their first laser and Komatsu probably has the vast majority of their 20+ installs in Japan(if not all). Cymer's technology at the 248nm node meets the market's needs in every way. They are qualified at more stepper/scanner companies than anyone else at 193nm and have a larger installed base of ArF lasers than their competitors combined.

TIA for your thoughtful, informative, and data laden comments.

Bob

Carl, I think that what is ailing CYMI right now, is not so much competitive threats, but the fact that without new fabs being being built, the best CYMI can do is a minimal growth of the top line in the business of converting existing fabs to the smaller features. CYMI is like a bride at her wedding waiting for the groom who is late and late and late. CYMI tooled up (and increased in the process its break even point) to ship 1000 lasers per year and is waiting for the demand to materialize. Without a rash of new fabs announcements it may linger (and even lapse) a little longer. I think, however, that these new fabs announcement are going to come sooner or later, probably a slow trickle in the second half going through a crescendo into next year.

Lambda and Komatsu are probably waiting for the same development, since tightness in this market will be their opportunity to establish their own initial base, if, of course, they can eat the negative cash flow their laser operations have through that "waiting" period.

Could you elaborate on this vulnerability?

Whether the original comment was accurate concerning CYMI's competition, I am glad it was made...looks like everyone's is on their toes now and generating a usefull discussion on the competitive landscape.

Your comments would be appreciated.

>>they do not understand<< - I'm all ears Carl. Got any facts?
If you're making investment decisions based upon your perception of ignorant cheerleaders on a thread - that doesn't qualify as factual, nor do I think it's very smart. Fundamentals Carl - every $1.0 million per year analyst out there - backed up by their $1.0 billion investment banking houses reports that CYMI has a lock on the market. They support these declarations with facts. On the other hand, this thread has had no end of serial doom and gloomers on CYMI's competitive position - all declared on the fly - all supported with no more than personal attacks against anyone that posts here on CYMI's strength ( backed up by Morgan Stanley, Montgomery Securities and Merrill Lynch's RESEARCH) and they could care less if there are cheerleaders or doom and gloomers anywhere - they're Professionals. The management also reports that CYMI (while vigilant to competitive threats) has a lock on the market - supported by facts - and they could also care less about cheerleaders or doom and gloomers - they also are Professionals. Give us some facts Carl - not emotion.

Good Luck To Each And All
Curly
