Eddy, Re:The problem is,that the ordinary people on the street do not believe in the overnight conversion of our leaders who for decades have done nothing and still do nothing about various regimes which equally terrorize, prosecute and kill their minorities. Go no further as to look at Turkey and the Kurds. This abandonment of the Kurdish cause by Western powers is shameful! The Kurds deserve some kind of respect from the international community and the US should strongarm the Turkish authorities on this matter... Yet, once again, I'll blame the European Union on this issue as well: Turkey has applied to be part of the European Union. A few months ago, it received a humiliating ''NO'' from the EU Commission, and I remember that the following day, the Turkish government signed an important contract with Boeing instead of Airbus... I know that Turkey is far from being a perfect democracy... Yet, the Turks have done their best to please the Europeans: they had a woman as a prime minister, they've enforced a secular regime (ie cracking down on their islamist party) and, last but not least, as a member of NATO, they participate in the defense of Europe. Furthermore, Turkey is much richer than all these would-be EU members from Central Europe --whether it's Estonia, Poland, Slovakia, etc... All in all, if Europe would have welcomed Turkey as a new European member, it would have been all the more easier for European humanitarian lobbies to weigh on Turkey's policy toward the Kurds, the political prisoners, the freedom of expression, etc... And, as part of such a large political union, Turkey would have certainly complied with the EU viewpoint on these matters. But Europe didn't want of a Muslim body in its Christian community and, consequently, left Turkey outside in the cold... Now, tell me Eddy... if France was able to reconcile with nazi Germany about 50 years ago, why Europe can't reconcile with Turkey today? Are the Turkish crimes against Human Rights worse than the German crimes?
