Mardy: You flatter me! Some general views.... I commented on the first rumours and spoke to a few people (non-Ericsson). The general consensus was that it indeed fits in with current strategies ("string of pearls"). Ericsson is at the forefront of ATM within the public network, but there has been a lack of integration with the corporate LAN. The company are not interested in the LAN product market per se, as shown by lack of interest with certain companies in the past. The other large, notably the US telecom suppliers, strategies has been a little hasty I think. They have entered in to various mergers and agreements with large networking companies. My personal opinion is that these will not last forever. Convergence is happening, but there is a limit. Who, as a customer, would like to be dictated to by such a large corporations. Surely the best scenario is to be able to "pick 'n' mix" to offer the best solution/deal? Ericsson, now, is picking up speed within the IP solution business, as their previous acquisitions and co-operation deals are starting to pay off. Unlike the dim financial analysts, I view that a business can not be judged by its handsets (alone). The long term future (IMHO) is assured, but having said that, we will go through some tight times and in particular this year. I reckon the biggest gains will be starting as far away as next year. I am not a day trader so this does not worry me at all. I still believe (my socialist self) that you can not make money out of nothing....and I do not apologise to others on these threads for my conscience on this matter (actually good luck to you, honestly..it's just the way I am). Current issues will be the roll out of GPRS (and here Ericsson is streets ahead of the others). The 3G stuff will be a year away, but let's see what transpires out from the winners of 3G licenses in Finland (this may be an early indicater for future -global- business). On the fixed network side, all companies have been fairly quiet. Rest assured upgrading the fixed network is under way. As many know the 3G standards stipulates that there should be ATM in the fixed network. The AXE switch supports this, and guess how many of theses switches there are out there? IP is now one of the most important growth areas and yet again the company fully supports this. A recent BT order was generally ignored, but it was a turning point (the AXE also supports IP). The old product divisions specialised in various aspects/products for IP solutions for operators and ISPs. To the dim financial analysts, I suggest that you look at what is happening in the telecom business, then take a look at Ericsson solutions and do your sums. This little moan about these analysts, in general, is not to say they have undervalued Ericy (although I think they have by a long way), but a more general "they know nothing about anything" and therefore I am thinking of changing my profession (Just check out their dumb questions yesterday and if they got any real answers?). Sod it, if you can't educate them...join them (they also earn substantially more than me!! Oh no, that was capitalistic! Oh well, if you can't beat them........" Mika
