This story a day old - so I won't charge you for it! _________________________________________ Posted 25/03/99 12:58pm by Mike Magee Compaq to open multi-million Taiwan plant Terry Shannon is reporting in his admirable CPQ-DEC newsletter Shannon knows Compaq that Mr Pfeiffer's organisation is set to spend millions of dollars on a plant in Taiwan. The move will help Mr Pfeiffer keep costs down in order to compete with his favourite bete noir, the hardware Dell from Hell. Late last year, we reported such plans. (Story: Compaq, IBM dump on Taiwanese PC manufacturers) But while it may spell good news for the big Q, Taiwanese assemblers with contracts with Compaq are likely to be less pleased. Compaq's UK PR office was unavailable for comment when we tried them this morning. ®2nd and even older story from a The Register link: A longtime chum from The Company Formerly Known as Digital validated the contractual constrictions imposed on ironmongers by Redmond power lawyers. Folks in the know have long contended that Microsoft demands cash tribute for each Windows NT-capable Alpha workstation or server that TCFKAD manages to sell. Whether or not said box actually ships with NT. The recent debut of the Compaq AlphaServer DS20 “Goldrush” offers evidence of this policy: an entry 128MB Goldrush equipped with NT lists for $16 ,870. The same system, sans NT, also lists for $16,870. “You get what you pay for,” opined my pal. Compaq appears to be making progress on other Redmond-related fronts. Just a few weeks ago, a beta version of full-blown 64-bit NT booted successfully on a DS20 server. More recently, the OS was sighted on a TurboLaser. Word has it that the full-fledged 64-bit implementation was accompanied by a 64-bit version of SQL Server. If Microsoft manages to get the 64-bit “Sundown” OS out the door before Merced materializes, Alpha will be the only game in town for OEMs and customers who crave a 64-bit alternative to Unix. Stay tuned for a Win64 demo, perhaps at Compaq's Innovate 99 forum deep in the heart of Houston.
