No, they were simply unable to withstand the competition that occured when everybody and their brother started making personal computers. When they were the "first mover" everything was peachy, but as soon as credible competition appeared, their monopoly was lost.

The C-64 had the largest installed user base of any single computer manufacturer, something I would call "critical mass", but being off the ground only made it that much farther to fall back to earth.
