I see a lot of similarities between PeopleSoft and Apple of a couple of years ago. A once high-flying growth company that can do no wrong with an awesome culture, great people, and loyal customers sees its stock drop from over $50 to the teens, and lays off people for the first time. Many employees leave the company and investors leave the stock for dead.

Like Apple a couple of years ago, I think PeopleSoft is at a crossroads where they have to reinvent themselves. For PeopleSoft, it's the Internet. Also, they need some new blood to help transform the company. I think Duffield is smart in trying to hire a new COO to run operations.

If PeopleSoft can succeed in this transformation, the potential is incredible. Apple has nearly tripled in less than a year and a half, and the potential market for PeopleSoft's Internet-based products is much greater. The question is whether PeopleSoft can successfully reinvent themselves and be a winner in the new millennium.

I'm not sure if PeopleSoft has bottomed yet, but wherever it bottoms it could be a tremendous long-term buy, either for investors or someone wanting to take them over. The time to buy Apple was when no one wanted the stock and everyone was bearish. Is it time to buy PeopleSoft yet?
