Ken, I participated in the WDCY2K email poll (the first one). I gave us a 4 to 5 rating at that time. What you fail to mention is that much of what some of these pollsters are incorporating into their analysis is the reactions of hyper-active imaginations like yours reacting in ways that actually exacerbate the problem, not alleviate it. It is sad to say that most people will feel inclined to panic and make things worse by reflecting attitudes like yours, rather than prepare for 2-3 months, help their neighbors, provide relief to those who need it, and maintain cooler heads. I know I'm touting a pipe dream since most people act like the herd. But we need more people helping folks to make rational decisions based upon prudent contingency plans rather than based upon the worst case scenario you or Gary North can dredge up in your fear-stricken minds. It ain't the end of the world. It might reshape the world we know, but it ain't the end of the world. I'm sorry Ken... I don't frankly care whether the world ends or not. I could have spent my entire life worrying about all the things that might go wrong. All I can, or anyone else, can do is prepare for what we should have already prepared for. Y2K would be no different than a whole lot of potential disaster scenarios that could erupt, including your vaunted Russian "doomsday" device (that has never been officially acknowledged nor was even known of until a Russian defector informed US intelligence agencies). And intelligence agencies can't be sure that this isn't a clever counter-intelligence operation aimed at preventing US military minds from getting any ideas of taking advantage of the dilapidated Russian early warning system. (did you think of that possibility? What??!! The Russians lie??!!) Those analytical ratings were based upon gut feelings and soft analysis. Few of those people have much more hard information than any of us who peruse their opinions and websites. Now Ed Yourdon is quite knowledgable. But he is a programmer and not a social psychologist. But Ed is also expecting people like you, who are captured by their fear to act upon that fear and do some terrible things that normally we'd find beneath our dignity. What if by chance, people opted to lead rather than follow their fears. Regards, Ron
