Personalization of service and knowledge of cutomer preferences are very important whether in the retail, physical world or on the Internet. You are right that Amazon is a leader at this, and their acquisition of the leader in shopbot technology, Junglee, demonstrates their commitment to expanding their breadth, as does their investment in drugstore.com. (BTW, Junglee's technology also powers GNET's comparison shopping service, WebMarket. See: go2net.com )

While I ADORE Amazon, I have to put in a word for GNET's recently acquired exclusive bookseller, Barnes & Noble. On 2 occasions recently when I have tried to order from Amazon and been told the book is out of print, I click over to B&N and they were able to send me 6 copies!!! I buy a LOT of books and ease of ordering means a lot to me.
Barnes and Noble might like to know that I went to Amazon originally out of frustration at the difficulty with checking out purchases at the cash register at a Barnes and Noble store site closest to where I live. The people working there give the impression that they are scholarly literary types who scorn the intrusion of "filthy lucre" transactions in their libraries. They have 18 check out computer stations, but only one or two people to operate them and take your money while 15 customers stand in line. BUT -= go to B&N online and they are fast becoming competitive with the Online Brandname Colossus, Amazon. GO B&N on GNET!!!
