No one has said much along these lines, but I think Albright is not very bright at all. Likely from the Serb perspective she has looked merely at the surface of the thing, succumbing to the tyranny of Serbian atrocity and feeling herself justified in doing whatever she thinks necessary to stop it. (I think Clinton is just thankful to Hades he has yet another opportunity to bomb his troubles from the headlines.) Americans demonized the Serbs, particularly Milosevic, and then expected them to feel grateful as they sat with us at the “bargaining” table. It really was quite silly. If the Serbs are demons they should have been destroyed. If not, then we should not have done to them what we have done. One might have demonized them if the bone of contention between they and the Albanians was forged 800 years ago, having never been renewed by either party. But this is not the case. As recently as 50 years ago new and very serious challenges between the Balkan groups were formed and left unresolved. It would have been perhaps a bit more acceptable to the Serbs had Albright seriously focused here as she tried to force a peace “deal.” Considering our dealings in Serbia, I am seriously reconsidering my opinion of our dealings with Iraq. Despite Saddam's treatment of the Kurds I seriously question if he is the madman we have made him out to be. I simply do not buy that he is a demon so terrible we must starve a whole country to get him. To form a real opinion I perhaps should research the thing better, this time removing the opaque glasses of democracy and looking at it a bit more objectively. But before I do this I will have to take in a few more days of trout fishing. P.S.> The Russians have been claiming they will not get into the thick of this recent conflict, and no doubt it would not be a good thing either for them or us if they did. But if this mess continues I simply cannot see how they can remain in their current posture. Otherwise a “brotherhood” with Russia will be quite worthless.
