"1. << by this time next year John T. Chambers, chief executive of Cisco Systems Inc., wants Cisco to be deploying phone systems based on Internet technology rather than on traditional communications systems. If nothing else, he wants almost all of Cisco's 17,000 employees using them.>> Why wait for 1 year while can get it from IDT now? IDT is at least one year ahead of Cisco without doing anthing from now on. They can save lots of time and R&D cost by acquiring or becoming a partner with IDT. 2. << Cisco will have to come up with I.P.-based office phone systems that offer conference calling, call waiting, voice mail, call transferring and other features office workers take for granted.>> This is why Cisco needs AOL as well. 3. When the above two put together with the IDT's agreement with Netscape, I see Cisco/AOL/IDT in pack, possibly with a few other major players joining the camp. 3. <<they are locked in a struggle to control the networks of the future and the tens, perhaps hundreds, of billions of dollars that will be spent to build them.>> IDT is already a leader in the networks of the future which is mega billion dollar industry. Great future & growth potential ahead of IDT. 4. <<Cisco faces competition from three kinds of companies: traditional equipment makers like Lucent, Ericsson, Siemens, and Northern Telecom; data networking companies like the 3Com Corporation and Ascend Communications Inc. (which has agreed to be acquired by Lucent); and upstarts like Vocaltec Communications Ltd. and the Clarent Corporation. Lucent, Cisco's biggest and most important competitor, is also hard at work developing Internet telephony products...>> Is this a part of reason why the annpouncement has been delayed? IDT is technology every major players want. Is this why Lucent (rumor) came into picture to stop Cisco getting a deal with IDT? 5. <<Delta 3 mostly uses equipment from Ericsson, while IDT, tellingly perhaps, mostly designs its own equipment. IDT has also evaluated equipment from Siemens, which in turn has also worked closely with a small carrier called USA Global Link.>> IDT certainly has many ducks in a row. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Many big guys are competing to get a date with IDT, hoping to make bed together. IDT is in win win situation no matter what happens. Sorry for the rambling. Good night. JP "
