ALL: Important News - ZD Intelligence reports the following based on their PC research in the 1st quarter of 1999;

Update: Dell Strikes Back

In the February 23rd Insider entitled "Dell: Is This the End of the Ride?" we took a look at Dell's US workplace market share to get a view of what was going on. The results we had at that point were from the fourth quarter of 1998 and what we saw showed a slight decrease of market share, while market leader Compaq increased market share. In the article, I was of the belief that Dell's slow fourth quarter was a momentary slowdown and since we now have preliminary results from our 1Q 1999 quarter survey of US workplaces, I can put that theory to test.

The preliminary results from the Projected Market Monitor survey of US workplaces in the first quarter of 1999 reveal that for the first time ever, Dell has surpassed Compaq in total PC shipments within the workplace segment.

Dell's move into the top spot within the US workplace has been driven primarily by Dell's strength within US commercial workplace sites with more than 500 employees. This high value segment has been the focus of Dell's salesforce over the last few years and from the looks of it, the hard work has paid off. Dell has increased market share consecutively in every quarter since the fourth quarter of 1997 and the preliminary results from the first quarter of 1999 indicate that Dell is now opening up a sizable lead over Compaq.

This market share increase shows that Dell's "ride" is far from over and in someways may be just beginning.
