3dfx needs OEM deals. Sales are more steady and predictable. More consumers get Glide with their computers that way (which strengthens 3dfx's clout in the industry). Less reliance on the retail hype cycle. Very good economies of scale.

If 3dfx really is having more demand placed on their production capability than their current capacity (no sign of that yet), then they can cut a deal with Solectron or one of the other contract manufacturing to pump out some cards for them.

Plus - they've been telling Wallstreet that the STB deal was for OEM deals. They have to deliver.
