gmccon, From one investment service on integrated oil companies:

-- Mjr Int Oil & Gas -- Basic Materials 29-Mar-99 09:46:56 BP Amoco and ARCO are leading the way higher this morning as news of merger talks between the two firms filters into the market.
Analysts and investors are hopeful that the merger will kick off a wave of consolidation among major oil companies. Trading in sweet crude oil is aiding the gains, as the May contract trades at $16.31 with a $0.14 gain. Merger news typically attracts institutional investors who use a hedge-type approach to investing known as arbitrage. These firm's are attracted to the inherent risks/rewards associated with takeovers.
