This is why I can't see a merger of Dell and IBM, or Dell taking over IBM PC sales directly, as it has to build up the capacity itself. I expect that Dell will start selling IBM services, leveraging (once again) off its current sales and consulting efforts (see article below for tip off). IBM PC factories will end up rusting into the ground as the rest of IBM makes money as a supplier to Dell. Much more exciting to me than the rumored glamorous merger model that some are hoping for. New services could include help desk and on-site installation, in addition to the custom configuration and break/fix services that Dell now offers. Dell will not significantly expand its small services staff, but rather will look to broaden partnerships with services companies, with Dell staff as the first point of contact. Services now account for a percentage of Dell's revenue in the low teens; Dell hopes to increase that percentage to about 30 percent by next year, and also will look to services as a separate revenue center, rather than a driver of systems sales, said company vice chairman Kevin Rollins, speaking at the Dataquest Predicts 99 conference.
