Meat- Before you go hide in some Tejano bar for the next 6 months debating philosophy with Terrence Malik <G> I had a question for you:

What's your take on the IBM/Dell deal..future? Also, any clue about the royalty payment issue (that JK and Gabriel have brought up)...

Did you see that Lucretius is still warning us? A year later!

Best....

Meathead, let me ditto the thread remarks about your post on the differences between DeLL and eMachines. It certainly helps clear the air quite a bit around here...

Meathead, I'm sorry, but your analysis is incorrect.

eMachines come with Windows 98 and MS Works 4.5. It's on their web site and you can see them at any Best Buy or Office Depot (was at Best Buy this weekend).

"etower | 333id: $599
(System alone, after rebate. Rebate coupons are only available through participating authorized retailers.)
Click here to see product info: etower | 333id
Intel® Celeron™ 333MHz (w/ 128KB Cache), 4.3GB HDD, 32MB, 5x DVD-ROM, 56k V.90 Modem

etower | 366i: $599
(System alone, after rebate. Rebate coupons are only available through participating authorized retailers.)
Click here to see product info: etower | 366i
Intel® Celeron™ 366MHz (w/128KB Cache) PPGA CPU, 4.3GB HDD, 32MB, 24x CD-ROM, 56k V.90 Modem

With complete multimedia capabilities, emachines make computing easy. emachines offers products and services packaged for you, such as Microsoft® Windows 98®, and Microsoft® Works®, and special offers like 30 days free Internet access.." [note:includes speakers]

Moreover, if you look at the 333 Celeron offering, you will see an identical 4.3GB HD and a 5x DVD, not a 32x CD-ROM.

You can buy a 15-inch KDS monitor for $100 or accept the Dell credit (which is less than $200 btw - see below for price). However, with about 1/2 of their purchasers not first time buyers, the monitor probably isn't needed for them.

If I were to equip a Dimension 333V comparably to the eMachine 333id w/o monitor, it would cost $874 plus shipping. I would get a 4.3GB instead of Dell's 6.4GB (but dell offers a $1 credit for the 4.3GB) and a 4MB ATI card instead of Dell's 8 MB card, but I would get the 5x DVD instead of the 32x CD-ROM. Your mileage may vary.

The rebate coupons are available through places like Office Depot and Best Buy . . . paticipating authorized retailers.

I will agree with you that the DELL warranty and tech support toegether are probably better, but I've had some difficult times getting the on-site part honored. Last time I had a return problem, I had to get American Express involved to straighten out the problem. (Lest you think I don't like DELL because of these problems, let me assure you, I still like DELL machines and if they were more reasonably priced for Celeron offerings I would definitely consider buying. Sometimes I wonder if the level of support changes with how many machines you order or the size of your business.)

But what the heck, market was up strongly today with the NASDAQ up 3% and DELL was up 1-9/16ths.

Meathead: Re The eMachine
There is much work to be done by eMachine to avoid the same fate as Amstrad discussed on page 205 of Michael's book- Direct From Dell. Sig
