You nicely sum up what did occur - a seasoning of the Establishment. You do point to the price - a disengagement of the most courageous from the rest, who pulled back and suffered or never bought it at all and prospered. I wonder about your conclusion on preprogrammed failure, though, and the implied ineffectiveness of the retooled successors. You must be underestimating how radical the movement was and how thoroughly it was splintered, made disreputable, and persecuted. The Earth First / vegilante :) group is recovering still. I like what I hear at the Greens sites, but I also notice they collect every odd group there is. Wiccas, Communists,... The Eleven was then, when it was fresh, when the Establishment hadn't sweetened its pie with our sugar. Now reconstruction is 3 forward, 2 back. It looks like politics, not freedom.
