The most efficient way to safe guard this type of attack is public education. What about someone write an executable which will format your hard-drive if you run it, and attach this executable in the email? If people are not careful, they open the email, run the attachment, they are hosted. What is different between warning people don't run .exe and don't enable macro?

Everything has a trade-off. If it brings more benefit than harm, it worth the consideration. Programs can host your machine, so you don't run programs. Real smart.
