Actually, and this goes for both systems, you could have an externally mounted antanna on any tank, boat, troop carrier, aircraft, jeep, etc. etc.

The coverage issues are more sensitive with small antannea handsets, etc. Particularly given that you'r broadcasting right next to a microwave absorbing bag of fat and water.

On a vehicle you could have a much larger antanna. The antanna alone can acount for at least 1dB gain in both directions, and probably more with the high tech, large, military designs.

Global sat phones are the perfect method for the military to link up all of their heavy equipment. Custom terminals with an encryption option would be necessary, but I think this will ultimately be a big market for I* and G* too.
