I understand the sats require several weeks of orbit raising and check out before they're declared ready for service, hence the time lag between launch of the 32nd satellite and start of service. OTH, I believe the coverage is probably not that bad with as few as 24 sats. (Early on, the plan was to start service with only 24, but somewhere along the way they decided they needed 32.)

I agree, they should start a VERY robust beta test phase as soon as possible, maybe pass out loaner handsets for free to the SPs' best customers that are willing to volunteer to provide brief reports on their experience using free satellite phone service.

Thats a good point. At 32 sats, I believe G* is only limited in capacity, rather than coverage (You should still be able to alwayws get a connection).... and since the early days will see demand the lowest the capacity issue isn't a problem.

But getting manufacturing, marketing, billing, distribution and all that going by July 1st might be an issue. Remember the delay for Iridium was software, not launches.

But a big honking Beta Test on July 1 would be good.
