From GDICHAZ ( Chaz too) :-). Where to begin. First complements and kudos to Uncle Frank for this thread. Emerging gorillas (though I didn't know what I was doing by the Gorilla/Royalty jargon) has been my interest and style for quite a few years. For starters, I disagree with the idea the aging gorillas should be the investment focus - emerging gorillas are where the most bang for the buck will be IMO. Mike Buckley and I have discussed this for years. I bought Cisco in the summer of 1990 and Ascend in 1994. Wellfleet with Cisco and then moved entirely to Cisco. Stratacom (later taken into Cisco) and Cascade alongside Ascend (and - choke - Shiva :-( ). Just a bit of history. I spotted these folks primarily by research for emerging technologies. Then looking for leaders in these technologies. And buying a basket first , then concentrating as leadership emerged. Had no idea I was following what are now some basic Gorilla Game rules. But happy I did what I did.

Cite this history to suggest that I see Qualcomm as the best emerging gorilla candidate right now. Think the Ericsson agreement which swept away many clouds on the horizon a major gain for the Q. Warning. I am an optimist. My glass is half full and many of my "discussions" with Mike Buckley over the years have been where I have been a bit exuberant and ahead, while he has been realistic and properly skeptical.

Enough for now.

Except that Sun Micro is an emerging gorilla IMO.

And Nortel Networks (NT) and Lucent (LU) kings IMO.

I have moved entirely to concentrating on wireless (including satellite) and fiber in my seach for gorillas in the mist - except for Sun Micro and Citrix which I still hold outside of telecom (and some Cisco of course).

Cheers,

GDICHAZ (Chaz too)

PS To Mike, as always respect and best regards.
