I am not arguing with you --- the establishment could well be "subversive" --- in terms of your own set of values. No state, in fact, is utopian.

If you don't like the prevailing values of your state you can attempt to change them. Either by political means or by violence --- revolution. And, if you can muster enough support you might succeed in overthrowing the state. You, and enough others, just have to feel strongly enough about it and be prepared to lay down your lives, if necessary. No violent revolution is easy.

I'm suggesting, however, that oppression, corruption and arbitrariness are implicit in any and every state, including those that have the most noble aspirations. Accordingly, however selfish it may appear, for the individual to attend to his own life, rather than the collective, may actually be the better path to take.
