Bob--- Think GEOSTRATEGY!!! This is happening on the southeast flank of NATO, with the potential to draw in two members (Turkey and Greece). NATO needs to establish its credibility in its own back-yard. Also, we are interested in keeping radical Muslims, like the Mujaheddin of Afghanistan, out of the conflict. Further, we are interested in demonstrating that we will not tolerate a great deal of instability in the former Soviet empire. There are a few other points, but you get the picture. Of course, all of this is blown to hell if this fiasco gets any worse....

The one thing I am certain of is that it is not a humanitarian issue.

Legacy. The liar needs a war to round out his term. He has lamented in the past that he hasn't had a real international crisis to challenge him and time's running out.
