While these are all valid points, especially the powder keg of Greece and Turkey (and I would add another reason - that with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, NATO needs to somehow justify their continued existence), I still can't escape the feeling that there's something more to the whole thing that we don't know about.

Again... Follow the money.
