<I sense a orchestrated gov plan to "panic us gently." > I do too. I sure hope things don't end up as bad as I think they will, but if bad things do happen ... you and your family ... myself and my family ... should be OK ... relative to others that do nothing, or minimal preparation. I'm not willing to take the chance with my family - that some who are dismissive about this, are willing to do. At the same time, I don't want my basic lifestyle altered TOO, TOO much. So I don't do the buy grain and hand-mill for 10 yrs bit. I'm buying all of the stuff I like and then new some new stuff (i.e., canned vegetables). Am experimenting with recipes now. Area's great for gardening. Long growing season. Fancy restaurants back east get special produce flown in from here. Am growing it on my own now. It's even better an hour or two from your garden ... to your dining table ... than it is prepared impeccably at a top-rated restaurant. Been there - done that. Did it all over the world. When push comes to shove. When dining with others ... it's not the food that makes a meal memorable. It's the people you're sharing it with. Instead of another trip to Europe, or a trip to Hawaii [I used to travel 3 months out of the year] ... I've put my money into my new home and other, more practical, things;-) I have an orchard with apple, peach, plum and pear trees. Rasberries, strawberries and blackberries. Even asparagus ... I never realized it took 2-3 years for a good crop. 48 climbing rose bushes. Lilac trees. Flowers coming up all over the place. This is heaven. Actually, this Y2K thing (except for anxiety I feel for my family) - has been the best thing (in some strange way) that's happened to me. Forced me to reassess my values and lifestyle. Sometimes we're on a treadmill, and don't realize it. And, don't think of other options available to us - or even if we do - are often afraid to make a change. I love it up here in Oregon. People are GREAT!! My new home, after work is complete (10 days - cause parents arrive on Apr 13th) is far larger and more beautiful than my Houston home. And, the view ... surrounded by mountains ... is magnificent. My contractors and works have been inspired. Had over 15 tons of rocks & boulders delivered today. (Sounds like a lot - but some of these boulders weigh 1-1/2 tons!) Landscape guy has had wonderful ideas. Next week waterfall at entranceway will be complete. Might not wanna waste my propane on it next year though - LOL. But, at least for now, and later ... I can enjoy the sound of running water:-) FYI - I'm getting a 500 gal propane tank. However, I will be getting everything retro-fitted with propane orifices in gas appliances [stove, heater, dryer - not sure about fridge] by September ... and will then be leasing an additional 250 tank from propane company @$35/yr (excluding fuel). I'll be on propane last 3 months of year. I can operate everything in the house - just like things are now - with the orifices. The reason I'm going to go all-propane several months before year-end, is that labor and parts (orifices) will be in demand later. I don't want to be "standing in line" with others then. Plus propane company gives priority to "regular" customers. Am gonna have some friends with propane generators around when guys do retro-fitting. Will keep ALL parts. If natural gas ends up being OK, I can easily go back to gas - and we'll all know how to do install & un-install. Good luck to you. Lots to learn, huh? Cheryl
