Yogi, Clinton is now running in quick sand. Today we bombed downtown Belgrade. What an international public relations coup that will be. Is he so dense as to believe this will not have far reaching diplomatic consequences for years to come? I fully understand the real underlying reasons for this incursion, but the price to be paid for security, stability and control in Europe will be high indeed. This mess has just begun. It will make the Bay of Pigs look insignificant by comparison. We have awoken the Russian bear again at a time when the oligarchy which runs the show in Russia needs a diversion. Russia is a political and economic basket case. A common enemy does much to divert the population's attention from the internal trouble and will galvanize public opinion. Russians have both a religious and ethnic kinship to the Serbs. The Russian spin machine is working as hard as ours is here in the West. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to see what is going on there. They made need IMF funds, but the long term effect of any IMF bail out plan will pale by comparison to a renewed ubiquitous resentment of the American devil by the Russian people. American style capitalism has been a dismal failure for the rank and file Russian because of the rampant corruption which has concentrated wealth in the hands of the few who pull the strings. Now we are bombing their allies and jeopardizing their strategic position and security in Europe. What better way is there to avoid an economic and political implosion than to appeal to nationalism, religious and ethnic ties while railing against a common enemy. Look at history. Pure hatred of Jews and their alleged alliance with WWI enemies was fomented by Hitler and galvanized the Germans such that a country on the brink of utter collapse in the '20s arguably had the finest war machine on the planet by 1939. In the U.S., it was preparation for and going to war against the hated "Krauts" and those "yellow devils" in Japan that effectively ended the depression, not all of Roosevelt's New Deal programs. These are sad realities. The Russians were very close to civil war. Just watch what unfolds in Russia in the months to come. The spin will continue unabated. The anti-American sentiment will intensify. The Russian bear will begin to beat it's chest again and there is a good chance that the cold war will be renewed. Western style capitalism is all but dead in Russia. They will probably revert to a closed economy and monetary system and default on their international obligations. The country is ripe for a hard line strong man to take control. We are providing the external fuel for this to occur and the oligarchs, who are already wealthy beyond any reason, will allow it to happen if it ensures internal stability and preservation of their wealth. Our actions now may prove to be the single most ridiculous foreign policy blunder since Chamberlain exclaimed that he had "brought peace in our time" after the meeting with Hitler in Germany in 1938. Stupidity, arrogance and naivete - a very dangerous brew that's about to bubble over again. BWDIK. Franco
