According to Red Herring, DSL will be the way the telcos exact their revenge. What do you think?

========

"The telcos' revenge"

The future of the phone companies is in Internet access. New DSL (digital subscriber line) services show what the future will look like: high-speed Internet access at low cost.

This poses a danger to existing ISPs. During the purchase process for new access services, customers are vulnerable to being picked off by the telcos' ISP arms.

Furthermore, getting DSL means having someone over to install new gear. Since most ISPs don't have field service divisions like phone companies do, they are at a competitive disadvantage. (A few alternative DSL providers do have complete offerings, but most ISPs do not.)

That said, my own experience indicates that the phone companies are not ready to handle the extremely high demand for DSL. Early adopters are helping local telcos work the bugs out of the system, and it's not fun.

But Yahoo's purchase of Broadcast.com turns out to be extremely well-timed. The demand for DSL and other high-speed consumer Internet technologies will force a rapid change in Internet content and services.
