missing the simplicity of the Cold War, the US may interpret the diversity of stances that nations are now taking out in the real world to be a threat. The Cold War warriors will see a new role in the typical process of identify-threat-then-counter-threat, instead of throwing out that process as unsuited to the new conditions. Big govt is requesting infinite resources be channeled to counter every vague threat they can think of. Initially the cost is spread across coalitions like the Gulf Council or NATO, or billing Korea a few hundred mill, or Japan likewise. Eventually the effectiveness of this approach will be in question - what is the bill for Allied Force? the US taxpayers feel 2 to 1 that it has made matters worse. how many billions for ineffective Drug War? $150 Billion for Star Wars? how many billions in lost sales from limiting hitech exports like crypto or commercial satellites or CPUs?
