The US should also take into account this cultural shock in their current military endeavours. Europe can deal with an economical/financial globalization but, as soon as such a globalization becomes (geo)political then it resents being in the back seat...

Well by all means I suggest that Europe get its collective act together and take the lead on Serbia.

This entire issue has become a p*ssing contest between Clinton and Milosevec, and that plays right into the hands of Milosevec propaganda machine, while it undermines Clinton's ability to "sell" this intervention to isolationist Americans who wonder just how the hell we got to this point.

Europe must take the lead, or at least a more active role and reduce US exposure.

I'm tired of hearing "we have to win this thing or US credibility will be undermined throughout the world". Rather EUROPE HAS TO WIN THIS THING, and the US, as a NATO member must be ready to do its part, but not try to dictate how the action is undertaken.

Time for Europe to grow up and deal with its neighbors. Milosevic can win the propaganda war by turning this into a "one on one" between the US and Serbia. However, it is much harder for Milosevic to ignore the European collective since they are his country's neighbors (and you have to get along with your neighbors eventually).

I see this lack of UNIFIED ASSERTIVENESS by Europeans as more of a threat than Serbia. So long as Europe fails to take the lead in solving their internal problems, the US will be forced to risk the lives of our men, the reputation of our nation, and ultimately the military and political credibility that helps to maintain a semblance of stability in this world.

Tell you what guys... I'm fully prepared to support a NATO ground force action so long as it removes the US from being responsible for the political "leadership" of this action. Clinton needs to shut up and let NATO and European leadership take over. That's our entrance, or our exit. The minute this becomes personal battle between two leaders, we walk down the path of all-out war that neither nation really desire. Making it a personal battle of wills between Milosevic and Clinton really undermines the heart of the issue, Europe's own willingness and interest in maintaining stability in their region.

Regards,

Ron

Gustave, you must have inhaled what Clinton never did. :-)

1. .<<< Remember that President R. Reagan was responsible for your massive budget deficit: when he sat in the White House, the U.S. deficit was in the $billion bracket and he pulled it up into the $trillion range! >>>

President Reagan supply side economics which resulted in dramatically lower tax rates nearly tripled revenues to the government. Tip O'neil and company simply increased spending fourfold. Reagan did spend money on defense. Thank God!if he hadn't we wouldn't have the stealth fighter, the tomahawk missile or the quality military people we do today. Besides building up our military directly resulted in ending the cold war. Sounds like a good return on our investment. Why don't you examine what Tip O'socialist Neil's billions did to reducing poverty? Zilch!

2. <<<Savings & Loan fiasco? How many billions of $ did it cost the US taxpayer?>>>

The savings and loan laws were changed by a Democratically controlled congress. The most egregious crimes committed regarding this issue were by Democratic politicians. Remember the "Keating Five".

3. <<<Clinton's currently reshaping --I should say reinventing-- the US foreign agenda/policy for the next century.>>>

If you call getting the U.S. mired in a civil war reiventing foreign policy, that takes real genious huh? Clinton is simply reacting to save his pathetic legacy. He's also trying to deflect the nation away from his real crimes. Those involving the transfer of america's most sensitive secrets to the communist chinese government. It's called treason in most places.

4. <<<Yet, this time, the US seem to behave as in a preemptive manoeuver: bombing a jingoist, ethnic-minded regime before it starts to spread around in the region... >>>>

There was virtually no indication that the current strife was going to spread into other countries. And if we were really concerned, we could have developed a "Balkan Shield" of troops around the region instead of bombing the serbian people. The serbian people are not America's enemy.

Your 2 cents is barely worth a penny. :-)

Michael

<<I think that President Clinton is one the greatest Presidents of the U.S.A>>

Unfortunately Gustave, that is the common impression of this President over seas. In reality from the home front, he has been an indecisive, unfocused, squishy President that, aside from his monumental political skills at home, is better suited to presiding over a support group than a nation. His bimbo escapades are a testament of his political skill at home of manipulating people and issues. Here is one of the most brazenly misogynistic men ever to disgrace public office and throughout all his trials and tribulations women have defended him and continue to adore him. Its too bad his political skills are wasted on a man with no vision, no purpose, no spine, and frankly, no decency.

Despite what this administration claims, government spending has increased, defense readiness has decreased, government responsibility has bottomed out, and its absurd to claim that government is responsible for the good economy. Cook the books, ride the wave of a good economy, this is the recipe for political success in America.
