NDS Lays Foundation for Novell -- Chris Stone, senior VP of strategy, Novell The executive largely credited with helping Novell regain respect and build key alliances is Chris Stone, the company's senior vice president of strategy and corporate development. In a recent interview with InternetWeek senior editor Jeffrey Schwartz, Stone explained key issues for Novell moving forward. InternetWeek: How strategic to Novell's future is your new digitalme user profiling software? Stone: It's extremely strategic because it puts a face on the directory. What the first browser did to HTTP and FTP, digitalme is doing for the directory. This may end up being the face to all directories. There is no reason why all directories wouldn't want to do this, but we are not going to make the same mistake as Netscape did; we are going to make it as ubiquitous as possible. InternetWeek: What applications will take advantage of NDS v8 as what you call an "Internet directory"? Stone: What you will see is a lot of new products roll out. We showed single sign-on to Lotus Notes, we showed managing the Cisco router, and the Citrix piece, where people can log in to their desktops from the Web. InternetWeek: What about this new focus on caching? Stone: The licensing deals with Dell and Compaq are a validation of our caching technology. This is rev 1, our introductory appliance product. I see a need for a directory appliance and a security appliance in the future. InternetWeek: If NDS v8 is going to be an Internet directory, customers have said you need a new pricing model. How do you plan to address that? Stone: People think we are giving NDS away, but we are not. It's a component of NetWare, where the average selling price is $150 a seat. We are making money on the directory. InternetWeek: Yes, but Microsoft took a hard line with the client-access licensing of Windows NT Workstation and Terminal Server. Couldn't you see a similar backlash? Stone: We know all the problems and where all the bodies are. I don't think we will make that mistake. It needs to be priced on a server basis. InternetWeek: How integral is NDS to digitalme? Stone: It won't work without NDS at this time. But it is using XML and standards so that we can do whatever else we want.
