Avoiding the mob is not the main worry, but it is rather finding competent management. Calling vendors who deal with a given company as well as prior employers of senior management is really the more basic thing to do if one is unsure.

As well, the MM's give a real hint to the level of cleanliness of a company. If there are none involved that you recognize as legit (other than wholsalers like NITE, NEUB and NITE who are usually accomadating shorts like me) you probably want to move on to another situation.
