SYNOPSIS:

AOL turning to Congress for helping in accessing Cable companies, such as ATHM, who is allied with T/TCI which provides Internet access

Cable 50-100X faster than most phone lines. To get AOL, subscriber would have to first get a service like ATHM, and then access AOL

However, ATHM can bundle its service with an ISP, while telephone companies are not allowed to bundle their service Internet services

AOL has been appealing to the 100-member Internet Coalition in the House, chaired by Democrat Rick Boucher of Virginia

Boucher says he will introduce a "foundation act" this month that aims to serve as a comprehensive approach to Internet issues

In the Senate, Republican John McCain of Arizona, who chairs the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, plans to hold hearings this month
and AOL's Steve Case has agreed to testify

T can offer TCI cable customers local phone service as well as Internet services over their cable connections, which are much faster

T has help from former Sen. Malcolm Wallop, friend TCI's John Malone and chair of anti regulatory group, Frontiers of Freedom

AOL wants to be available to cable subscribers for the same price as T's @Home service, about $20 a month. T says subscribers can get AOL on top of
@Home

Wallop says AOL made bad decision when it sold backbone a couple of years ago and AOL doesn't want to invest in its own cable network
