Total conjecture on your part, Derek. It's pretty hard to carry on an effective war when the enemy has occupied your homeland. Ask the Poles, Czechs, Hungarians, Estonians, etc.

>The Vietnamese had a greater stake in that conflict than what you give them
credit for. They would have fought from every nook and cranny and from behind
every tree with every weapon down to sticks and stones before they would have
given up. Their resolve was stronger than ours, they were willing to take appalling
losses to win their cause. They would have resorted to guerrilla tactics across the
length and breadth of Vietnam and worn us down till we decided to pack it up and
leave. Im no Jane Fonda, dont get me wrong. But history has shown that this was
the case. They had a dream, they had a cause they held worth dying for. Americans
didnt deem Vietnam worth dying for. They would have won irregardless because
they had time on their side.

I have no doubt it in my mind that the Serbs will do the same and prove to be even tougher!!

I remember a conversation I had with my brother in Greece some summers ago. Somehow there were 4 US soldiers downtown...My brother struck up a conversation with them and asked them: "Are you professional soldiers"...I am not sure how it came off but one of them replied: "Come on you make it sound like we are professional killers, it is just a phucking job man!". And then I see images of the Serb in Belgrade saying to the camera: "We will fight to the last man for our country....Shame shame shame on you"

Even with the latest technology....the Serbs got a cause to die for...we don't.End of story!

The mistake of the US in Vietnam was in seeing the struggle as an ideological one, between 'Communism' and a concept which they called at the time 'Freedom' - while the great majority of Vietnamese saw their involvement as just another case of foreign interference. They saw China's the same way - look how they treated the Chinese after the US finally did the smart thing and went home.

There are likely valid parallels between Vietnam and Kosovo, but it's also possible imho to infer too much from the comparison. Same with the Easter 1941 Wehrmacht invasion. It's Easter 1999, the Serbs are engaged in their own little Endlösung in Kosovo while NATO is softening up Serbian 'defenses' in preparation for the inevitable [imho] NATO boots on Kosovo ground. Happy Easter, everybody.
