Well, I don't think you actually "popped the door off it's hinges"...but I can see someone measuring to satisfy themselves as to the mathematics involved.

There's a lot to be said for good old fashioned experimentation, isn't there.

Funny thing, I bet you weren't alone.

The only way the true thickness could have been 90% of indicated thickness, is if the angle was about 26 degrees. That would require the drill holes straying from vertical by 11-15 degrees...always to downdip. That's not too likely, is it.
