Yes, the comments afterwards are realistic and a recommended read. The point in Linux's favour that is frequently not mentioned but I run into every day is that it is WAY more stable in everyway except the X system. X can run into problems with programs.

The comments are realistic and fair and underscore what I have been saying to people. Linux needs a desktop and publishing system ie editor-word processor that is integrated. Big topic and big job. I believe it can be done commercially as the other desktops out there were very small development teams despite the mantra that is oft chanted about 1000's of programmer. In the case of many modules we are talking just a few teams. The difference is they do not have a legacy of stuck together code where only machine language can get anything real done but are working in a development model where multi tasking is built in.. a terrific advantage.

Although the programs keep getting cranked out, the idea that programs of add ons HAVE to be open source is naive. The problem with people today is they cannot see markets where they are as obvious as dogs mating. The hunger for applications is obvious. Very few such apps made Windows popular. Lotus 123 and Excel and Word are responsible for much of the popularity of MSDOS. Add in the net and the free software Eudora and NEtscape and you have a runaway tool. The matching software for Linux is not there yet. It lags in many significantways.
